Home / Laundromat cost calculator
What does the laundromat actually cost you?
Most people have never added it up, because it leaves in fives and ones rather than as a bill. Put your real numbers in below. Every default here is set at the low end of the published national range, so if anything this undercounts.
Your numbers
Change anything that does not match your situation.
Set from household size. Edit it if you know your real number.
National range is roughly $2 to $5 to wash and $1 to $2.50 to dry.
Independent operators mostly charge $45 to $60. Default is $60, the top of that band, so the comparison does not flatter renting.
$130
about $1,560 a year
Trips assume you run up to three machines at once and are there about two hours, washing through folding. We do not put a dollar value on your time. Plenty of calculators do that to inflate the total. What your hours are worth is yours to judge.
Renting would save you money
At this volume you spend more at the laundromat than a typical rental costs.

No cost, and no obligation to rent anything.
Every assumption, in the open.
A calculator you cannot check is an advertisement. These are the defaults and why each one is set where it is.
| Assumption | Default | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Cost to wash | $3.00 | Published 2026 ranges run $2.00 to $5.00 for a standard machine and higher for large capacity. We use near the bottom. |
| Cost to dry | $2.00 | Ranges run $1.00 to $2.50, usually sold in six to eight minute increments, so a full dry often needs several. |
| Loads per week | 2 to 8 by household size | A family of four is commonly cited at eight to ten loads. We default that household to six. |
| Detergent | Not counted | You buy it either way, so counting it would pad the laundromat side of a comparison it does not belong in. |
| Driving and parking | Not counted | Real, but it varies too much to estimate honestly, and guessing high is how these calculators go wrong. |
| Your time | Shown in hours, never in dollars | Assigning an hourly rate to your Saturday is the single easiest way to manufacture a big scary number. We show the hours and stop there. |
| Water and power if you rent | Not counted | Renting at home does add to your utility bill. It is usually modest, but it is real, and it is not in the figure above. |
This is an estimate built on national averages, not a quote. Laundromat prices swing roughly 20 to 40 percent by region, and city machines cost noticeably more than rural ones. Your own receipts beat any of it.
